THE BIRD LIBRARY

A whole world of names.

A LITTLE LATIN. A LITTLE GREEK. A LOT OF BIRDS.

Two words. One species.

The first word names the genus, a group of related species. The second is the specific epithet. Together they form a scientific name. Many are Latinized Greek, place names, or people’s names.

SAY IT WITH CURIOSITY

There’s room for an accent.

Scientific names don’t have a single universal pronunciation. English-speaking naturalists, classical Latin speakers, and other traditions may pronounce them differently.

Our Listen button uses your device’s speech synthesis. It is a practice aid and may mispronounce scientific names. For reference recordings, use the International Ornithologists’ Union sound dictionary.

Read the genus and specific epithet separately. Practice each word slowly, then join them together.
